I can see that the photographer was sort of going with two themes here:
black and white (show in background quilt, and then in the clothes of the people); choking. Except dad is wearing a pink shirt and is the only one doing the choke. Mom is doing a half-hearted choke on dad.
Adherence to themes=fail.
Very true. You can tell the photographer is trying to have fun with people who just want a normal family photo. The poor daughter has a look of crap-this-is-gonna-be-framed-on-the-wall-where-all-my-friends-can-see. I know that look well…

I admit that I have a choking picture too…and I am the child being choked in the portrait. I don’t know what to say, or how to explain it.

I have one too of my grandfather choking me. Its all The Simpsons fault. Most of the photos would be early 90s.

Wow. This is confusing on so many levels. The quilt background, the horrible cropping, the subjects looking in different directions, the mom-to-dad chokehold, and the very frightening father-to-son neck grip. That poor girl just wants out of there. A highly successfully horrible family portrait!
He is totally going to get away with it. It’s the perfect crime!

Mr. and Mrs. Stranglehold. The daughter’s adopted, obviously.
Their daughter has a sorrowful demeanor, almost as if she’s saying, “This isn’t my real family”. Maybe she’s telling the photographer to dial 9-1-1. Or she’s explaining that “it’s just Timmy’s time to go. Dad already warned him twice in the car”.
i just noticed the kid being choked here looks eerily similar to the dude choking his mother in the other choker pic. is it the same guy?? the chokee becoming the choker?? what kind of sick family is this!
not a sick family…it’s my family and they were just having some fun. you remember fun…don’t you???
It’s lucky that the Dad hasn’t got curly hair, because if he did he would look disturbingly like the Yorkshire Ripper.

I’m the little girl in the pic… this was from either ‘87 or ‘88. I’m now 30. lol.
It was an outtake from a family portrait done in our house… and yes, my mother made that quilt.
I found this pic a few weeks ago in a box of hundreds of photographs… while looking for pics to humiliate my brother at his wedding this coming fall. I’m happy to report, he survived the choking incident. lol.
This is one of my fave pics on this site! Love the quilt background and the feeble attempt at matching clothes.
