This textbook armshelf would get a 10, even from the Russian judge.
This perfectly demonstrates that adorable and awkward are not mutually exclusive.
Awwww. She’s awkward but she’s totally adorable. I was just awkward at that age.
hahah oooh man i so had the same pic taken when i was younger lol.. how sad
Pipi Longstocking, eat your heart out!!!
the wall of sparkle lights did me in. Gloriously horrible and so wonderfully 80s! I’m going to look for my pic like this right now.
So I worked at Sears many years ago (1997) and they still had this background. When someone would come in being grumpy with us, we would position the starburst so it looked like it was exploding out of their ear. Otherwise, the picture would be great. They never noticed, but…man… it was always good for a giggle. Little inside jokes that helped get me through the day.
This girl is cute, though.
Oh, I think this little girl is adorable – she’s so cute, she’s even outshining those blinding lights in the background!
You keep calling it an “armshelf”. I always thought it was a “chin prop”.
She’s on a casting to become a Disney character herself
this looks like ME AGE 9!!! right down to the shirt.. well. i had a PJ shirt like that.
How cute! She’s a sweetie
wow…..circa 1983. Seriously, doesn’t EVERYONE have a picture like this? And just think, at the time, we thought this was cute!
ahh!!! this is my best friend! bahaha
she’s delightfully awkward
I read all the comments, thinking the same thing, and there you said it!
Or maybe Mallory, age 7.
HAHA! I totally owned every single Babysitters Little Sister book and pretended they were books about me. I love you.
I wore the same disney turtleneck for my kindergarden picture. *shudder* With a light denim vest. UGH.
Yeah I agree with many others. I see nothing awkward in this photo at all. She looks lovely and adorable.
I agree, she’s just a sweetie. I imagine we all have a silly pic somewhere wearing our favorite theme/cartoon in multiple forms…..though, she does look like she’s resting her arms on a carpeted toilet seat cover.
Perfect comment. The only really akward thing I see is the ugly carpeted toilet seat cover thing. Otherwise cute kid in typical kid clothes and pose.
The bangs, the glasses, the overalls, Mickey Mouse – oh, the 90s were a great decade.
This is actually my sister’s best friend. So imagine my surprise when I visited the site today.
This looks like an average photo of a kid from the 80s. I think she is sweet.
This is one of those cut outs you just put your head in to take a picture…. right???
Hey, I think we found the blond girl’s missing glasses from the Dan Johnson photo a few pages back!
She’s really cute. I can’t see why it’s an awkward one, just a sweet picture.
It’s not awkward! I find it adorable!
She is cute as a little button.
This belongs in a frame with a matt with 12 little ovals cut out, one for every year of school and then a big one in the middle for her graduation photo!
I have a photo of me aged 5 posed the same, I remember the photographer shouting at me for using an open palm instead of a fist.
& I hope my mother feels awkward for squeezing me into a dress that I also have pictures of me dressed in aged no more than 3 ! ( she liked that dress)
So not only was there fear in my eyes on that photo I was also being strangled ,lol
I have no idea where it is, but there is a picture of my somewhere (from 1966) in exactly the same pose. Wonder who on earth came up with that to begin with? The little girl is adorable.
Aww, what a cutie.
Uh, I don’t get why this is awkward. It’s an adorable picture of a sweet looking girl.
but look at HOW adorable… the twinkling stars in the background, the perfect Sears Photography studio pose, the Mickey Mouse shirt… I’m pretty sure there are even Disney characters on her overalls. This is so perfectly put together that it goes past adorable to creepy stepford-child-land.
Arm shelfs are an automatic awkward.
Brant is right. It’s more about the pose/photography/effects than the girl. No question she’s to-die-for cute. Cute enough without all that sparkly crap surrounding all her cuteness.
what’s really awkward is how many times i just said, cute.
That’s Ok, Michelle, it was cute!
She is cute as can be. I remember saying no to my first arm shelf when I was 17. I told the photographer I would never buy a photo of myself posed that way.
Wow, you were one mature kid. So many people get brainwashed into arm shelfing early on in their childhood. The problem is once you start, it just escalates, you know?
If you don’t talk to your kids about arm shelfing, no one will.
Can we get any more Disney on this kid? Sheesh,
But she is adorable.
how is this awkward at all? i think it’s adorable.
Seriously! I think we all have a school photo like this…well, I know I do…that’s for a later submission, though. She’s a cutiepie! That reminds me-I really have to go through all the 80s photos and pick out a good one.
I do. Same starry background and even the overalls, but mine lacks the classy arm shelf
She’s just a cutie!
I love how her Disney mock turtleneck matches her Disney overalls. And you know she’s wearing either Disney socks or Disney shoes – maybe even both.
don’t forget the disney underwear…
Adorable, awkward but adorable.
I want to see a VH1 “Where Are They Now?” special about some of these pictures.
I can tell you. Her name is Karen and she’s my sister’s best friend. She’s majoring in Vocal Performance at a small Christian college, and she is still just as awkward. I would know.
Just curious….which college?
Natty! I’m awkward in other ways now, not awkward looking. But I just had to share this bit of glory with the world. It’s just too perfect.
We adore you, Karen. Hope you’re still propped up against that ol’ photographer’s rug cube and smilin’ hard into your knuckles.
I love her! She should be the Patron Saint of Awkward Family Photos!
except that, technically, this isn’t a “family” photo. but it’s awesome none the less!
Why do moms insist on whisking a kid to “Picture Me” right after they Super Glue their fist to their chin?
Now, make a fist. Slowly ease it up underneath your chin. Kay, hold still right there. Now, just imagine you’re weightless, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by tiny little seahorses.
Perhaps this truly IS the work of Side-ponytail Deb.
I think that this is a sweet picture – nothing awkward here.
Nice hair…I’m digging her overalls too lulz
Almost looks like her fingers are tucked into her turtleneck. Love the coordination of the Disney shirt/overall combination
“Imagine you’re surrounded by tiny seahorses.”
OMG! I totally thought that when I saw the picture.
I could wrap you in some foam, or something billowy?
The best movie EVER!!!
I give her a 10 solely based on the awesome Disney overalls PLUS turtleneck. Rock that Mickey Mouse, honey!
Very well executed. The “neckless armshelf” is an advanced technique in awkward photography, in which the head appears to be completely disconnected from the body. It requires a turtleneck and precise placement of the hand, camera, and lights.
BWHWHWHWHAHAHA I hadn’t noticed that, but you’re SO RIGHT. that could be anyone’s head. Make me wanna photoshop MY noggin on there. now THAT would be awkward!
I am…humbled. The hair. The glasses. The background. The mouse on EVERYTHING.
Why do I think this girl is about to guest star on “Diff’rent Strokes” and say something sassy and cute to Arnold?
o….m….g…. can’t breath….laughing too hard……inappropriate laughter….
The little know it all!!
i think she’s more Full House awkward and would say something sassy and cute to Uncle Jesse
hahaha YES! Then she and Michelle and Teddy would sing a song while the Rippers rocked-out in the background. All the leather-clad indie-grunge rockers at the Smash club would just eat it up! Pepsi’s for everyone!
fellow children of the ’80s and ’90s i salute you! Plus, that classic “Olan Mills” type school photo background totally puts it over the top!
I was actually going to make a “Hello Larry” reference, but let’s face it; McLean Stevenson references are obscure even for the Internet.
I think this one is not awkward at all, just so sweet.
What a sweetheart. I agree.
I think this little girl is adorable. Not awkward…just very dated.
Minus .2 points for lack of a permullet, but this is still a weepingly fabulous photo!
