You Better Smile

You Better Smile - School Photos

“My son won’t smile for a camera. So this time, on picture day, as I took him to preschool, I told him he’d better smile for the camera this time. When I came to pick up the photos, the teacher pulled me aside. She said that the photographer was in tears, and this was the best he could do. At first, I was a little mad that my son couldn’t pull out a real smile, but it’s quickly become my most cherished photo. It’s so him… stubborn and defiant. Maybe not everyone saw the humor in it. When I gave a copy to my godmother for Christmas, as she said she wanted a photo of my son, she said, ‘What is this?’”

Kissing Cousins

Kissing Cousins - The 60's

“This is a photo of my cousins who are twins. We have no clue what the photographer was thinking, but this is one he showed the family. Let’s just say it was a simpler, more innocent time. They are a close family, but not THAT close!”

No Rod Required

No Rod Required - Photos

My kids were canoeing at a park when my son saw the tail of this huge grass carp and decided he wanted it. With no fishing rod or gear, he just hopped out of the canoe and grabbed it up. He loved on it for a little, letting the ‘mammarazzi’ shoot some pics, and released the shocked fish. Then I sent him home with his dad, since he smelled like a giant fish.”

A Bizarre Easter Tradition

A Bizarre Easter Tradition - Awkward Galleries

“My family’s bizarre Easter tradition: hard boiled egg-toss/mouth-catch. Here are the rules: color your eggs then pick a favorite. Everyone holds their egg point-side up, then my Grandpa (R.I.P.) would walk down the line tapping his best egg on your egg. If your egg broke, he moved down the line, if his egg broke you moved on. The person with the best egg was the winner. After the egg breaking, we would pick teams and go out on the lawn and throw the eggs from ever-increasing distances and you had to catch your teammates egg in your mouth. There was no clear winner of this. I literally thought every family did this until I joined the military in 2000.”
