Stumped

“My mother always got what she wanted and she wanted this family picture of my four brothers and me and my sister. The boys got to wear their lovely red and the girls got to wear beautiful blue.”

A Man in Full

“Me, my siblings, and my parents in our 1975 family portrait. My dad had this one on his desk until he retired.”

Sick Day Communion

“May 1986, the day of my First Communion in Italy. My father battling the flu and me battling the awful bride-like dress that scratched my neck and made me itch everywhere. My mother was clearly on the verge of a breakdown, having to take care of lunch and all the guests on top of everything else. Apparently my brother was the only one having a good time.”

Sunflower ’85

“It’s 1985, so of course I’m wearing my red mesh shirt, my jams, my high socks, and my BK basketball shoes.”

Emo Duck

“I was an emo teen with a pet duck named “lil Steve-o”. My mom reluctantly let me keep the duck for a few days before she took him to a friend’s farm so he could live with other ducks. After that, I was even more tortured of a soul.”

Open Wide!

“Told my son to make sure he kept his eyes open during the picture. Mission accomplished.”

The Peak Portrait

“In 1989, our family went to Olan Mills for a perfectly normal family portrait and at some point, it was decided normal wasn’t really our thing. I have no idea whose idea this pose was, but everyone involved seems remarkably comfortable and I’m just hanging there, fully committed to it.”

Wolfman Christmas

“My wife’s cousin was Wolfman Jack’s manager back in the day so he joined us for Christmas one year.”

Face Off

“My high school boyfriend and I got portraits done to give out as Christmas gifts one year. After we broke up, my dad loved the picture of me so much he cut his own head out of a different photo and glued it over my ex’s face, so he could still proudly display it on the fireplace mantel.”

Momouflage

“Back in the 70s when my mom could take a nap undisturbed because no one could find her.”
