I’m in 8th grade and we’re studying the civil war… one 90-degree day we were led out to a field behind our school where our teacher proceeded to scream “VIRGINIANS. VIRGINIANSSS.”. We were all a tad weirded out as he began a speech (which he claimed was authentic) pretending to be Pickett from Pickett’s Charge. At the end of said speech, he screamed ” FOR YOUR WIVES. FOR YOUR SWEETHEARTS. FOR VIRGINIAAAAAA!” so I, of course yelled “FOR NARNIAAAAAAAAA” as we ran for five minutes, for some reason re-enacting Pickett’s Charge without anyone ‘dying’. And did I mention that my teacher did this with strap-on binoculars, a floppy women’s hat and a weird pouch thing he hung around his neck?
With his white gloves on you can tell they are heading to a dance or other formal occasion. The dress isn’t really appropriate for daytime, but depending on what time of year it is, it could be 6 pm and still sunny outside, so it’s probably fine. Dude looks like he just found out General McLellen was fired.
I think you can tell whose idea this whole thing was. the things guys do to get a date!! She feels like the Belle of the Ball in her Scarlett O’Hara gown.
He feels like a drip. Little boys don’t dream of being like Rhett Butler these days…
Hahaha, nice. I actually go to college there, so me being ordered there every year isn’t too fun, either (well, I love my friends there, just not all the work). Of course, college there is a picnic compared to a battle.
I love this site!!! Provides me with much-needed amusement during tedious workdays!
But as a civil war reenactor (and incredible nerd) myself, I had to point out that her neckline is just fine…as stiff as the Victorians were, they were all about the chest hanging out.
The ankles were another story…
Sammy D obviously has not looked at any period images of women from that time period, nor researched any extant garments. Pick up some damned books and try to learn something about the time period, rather than just assuming that what the fat captain’s wife told you about clothing is correct, or using “Gone with the Wind” as documentation. Good God.
Sammy D is quite correct about the necklines! My PhD is in mid-Victorian fashion and I have come across many, many examples of very low necklines during that period- in photographs and illustrations. She is also quite right about the ankles. What did you think was wrong about her comment, out of interest?
There’s a fraternity here and their Spring Formal is all in period costume. All the girls wear huge dresses and all the guys dress up as Confederate soldiers, and it was definitely their idea. I always thought it was stupid. Get over it! YOU LOST!
PS, Steve – They wore big dresses like this in the North too.
Lisa: I think MissMatched knows that this is a Union uniform. I think she was just saying “here” (wherever she goes to college), there is a fraternity that holds Spring Formal with guys dressing up as Confederate soldiers.
I don’t think they look like they’re having fun at all (at least the guy doesn’t). Maybe it’s because he knows his light blue Wrangler jeans don’t exactly enhance the illusion of time travel.
Actually dear, that is the appropriate color of trousers for a Federal soldier to have worn. They are likely wool. I also don’t think he looks like he’s having any fun, lol.
I think this one is a bit snark-free. They look like they’re having fun. And I’m guessing he’s posing as if it were a 19th century photo – where they had to be very stiff for the amount of time for the exposure.
But the color and background obviously thows off the illusion. So snark points for that.

The most awkward part?
We’re Ohioans.
Didnt that guy try out for american Idol?
Poster boy for AWKWARD!
“I was sure I wrote ‘woollen undrgarments’ on the order form, not ‘wooden’.”
his hat looks like someone crushed the Oval Office trash can on the top of his head
Congratulations, what the right words … brilliant idea
It’s really amazing after 100+years or so that this guy can actually fit his skull into Yankee headgear. I guess skulls haven’t changed much
Why is their re-enactment in the front yard?
musta been the chick’s idea
He put the cold in Cold Mountain.
…their poor future children
Git off my land!
If you look at old photos from that era, you’ll realize that he looks exactly the way most men did in front of a camera.
(BTW I LURVE that dress!!!)
Thats a nice Confederate soldiers outfit does it come in his size?
UNION my bad….awkward
Is it just me or do you think SHE talked HIM into this picture? That’s a change eh?
With the casualty rates durng the civil war, I wouldn’t smile until at least 1867
this is my favourite pic on the site. If he had a white beard and was a little shorter he would look like jasper from the simpsons. awkward perfect
In which Narnia book did Mr. Tumnus join the Union Army?
Props. This is the best comment out of the bunch.

Frankly Scarlet, I don’t give a smile.
The expression on his face: ‘my Momma made me do this’.
She’s all happy with this opportunity to get all dressed up.
LOL
Too much starch in the pants and the collar….Akward
owwn … look at the face of happiness of man …hahaha…:D
AHHH!!!! THE YANKEES!!!!!
that guy looks so uncomfortable. and awkward.
I think you can tell whose idea this whole thing was. the things guys do to get a date!! She feels like the Belle of the Ball in her Scarlett O’Hara gown.
He feels like a drip. Little boys don’t dream of being like Rhett Butler these days…
I’m just here for the hangin’.
LOLLLLLL
Say, is that one of those genuine Civil War Era cyclone fences?
That smile and the way she is holding herself I think she found great pleasure in the Civil War.
He just found out he’s been ordered to a town called Gettysburg…
Hahaha, nice. I actually go to college there, so me being ordered there every year isn’t too fun, either (well, I love my friends there, just not all the work). Of course, college there is a picnic compared to a battle.
He is sad because someone sat on his hat and crumpled it.
Guys, seriously…it’s 90 degrees out and I’m in a wool coat…can we be done with the pictures?
lol they do look like wranglers. plus her neckline is too low for that period for the daytime. people might start talking

oooh snap. Plus wasn’t the victorian era in England and like maybe a century before the civil war in AMERICA! HA!
The civil war was in the 1860s, yes?
The Victorian Era? QV reigned from 1837 to 1901.
Emy Kate fails history by like maybe a century alright.
HA!

I know someone who had a Civil War reenactment Wedding… I did not go because that’s just strange. They were also asking the guests to dress up.
This is probably a similar couple. And the guy is obviously loving it.
lol i was wondering the same thing!
Where is his neck.

That is a union uniform. The North wore blue the South wore Gray….
Lisa: I think MissMatched knows that this is a Union uniform. I think she was just saying “here” (wherever she goes to college), there is a fraternity that holds Spring Formal with guys dressing up as Confederate soldiers.
And a fraternity is a kind of club for college students.
I say this was definitely her idea… good egg points to him for going along with it, though.
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.
zing!
A Union soldier with a Southern belle… what’s wrong with this picture?
Shotgun…er…musket…er…compound bow wedding….
Like “West Side Story”….
I don’t think they look like they’re having fun at all (at least the guy doesn’t). Maybe it’s because he knows his light blue Wrangler jeans don’t exactly enhance the illusion of time travel.

Frankly, Scarlett, I don’t give a damn?
LOL He sure don’t!
Who knew shoulder pads were so necessary during the Civil War? He must have at least 3 pairs on… or he has no neck?
“You’d look like this too if you were wearing wool underwear.”
he looks all itchy and hot from his woolen undergarments, while she’s free as a bird, commando under the crinolines and hoop.
‘Free as a bird’ and ‘under crinoline and hoop’ do not belong in the same sentence together. :p
Is this really an engagement photo? Looks more like prom or something to me.
It’s from a re-enactment, not a prom, or an engagement.
It’s a compound bow, not a re-enactment, prom, or engagement
I think this one is a bit snark-free. They look like they’re having fun. And I’m guessing he’s posing as if it were a 19th century photo – where they had to be very stiff for the amount of time for the exposure.

Ah-greed!
ah…nothing says period photography like chain link fencing!
lol!!
So, pose for a Civil War re-enactment, no weapons. Pose for a wedding and EVERYONE has a weapon.
Only in America.
lol!!!
You win …
yep, you get the comment prize on this one. lmao
For the win. XD
you are soo right.welcome to my world..
i have grown up around civil war reenacting,i’ve been to weddings at them!
“Shoot, this jacket sure do itch a heap.”
Ha,ha. Maybe it’s the breeches!
priceless comment.
Where’s his musket?
Don’t you mean compound bow?
Why use a musket when a compound bow is so much more effective?
ah….nothing says period photography like chain link fencing.
Too funny
honorable mention
Spot on.
Dear Ma… I got a great job down south doing theater…
Or a zipper in the pants – which wasn’t invented until 1918.
