Renaissance Regrets - AFP Hall Of Fame

Renaissance Regrets

“I lived in Luxembourg as a kid so my family did a lot of traveling in the five years we lived there. I was going through some old family photos this weekend and found the ones from our trip to Italy. In looking through the pictures, it was obvious that my siblings and I were not happy campers on this trip as we all refused to smile in every picture. However, this picture and the look on my face says it all! I’m sure my Dad thought it was hilarious to have his eight-year-old daughter pose in front of a fat naked man sitting on a turtle.

The statue is ‘The Fountain of Bacchus’, sculpted in 1560 by Valerio Cioli. He used Duke Cosimo I’s court dwarf as the model for Bacchus. If you want to see the statue today, or take your own picture with it, it’s at the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy.”

An American Privilege - Kids

An American Privilege

“This is a school assignment I completed when I was six years old. I blame my artistic choices on my five older brothers, and I was under the impression that ‘voting’ meant cheering your leaders in battle. The best part is that this was published in the school year book.”

Maroon 5 - Kids

Maroon 5

“My mother must have ransacked the Sears catalog to purchase these Sears Tuffskins maroon denim outfits (with white top-stitching) for all five of us kids. She got matching outfits for herself and Dad, who aren’t in the photo. Then we all went to Six Flags Over Georgia, where we were mistaken for – on multiple occasions – either a gospel group or a a country music band. As the eldest child (12) and only girl…I was completely mortified and spent most of the day dragging 20 feet behind my family. Flash forward 44 years and it is now my brothers’ and my most ‘precious’ (and totally hilarious) memory! Embrace the awkward!”

Snacktime Strife - Kids

Snacktime Strife

“My six-year-old daughter scribbled this note about her little brother, then stuffed in my hand an hour after she had a snack. It reads: ‘It’s just that everyone pays attention to Jay, not me so no one pays attention to me, so people don’t feed me that much.’ She was apparently starved for more than just attention.”

Window Watchers - Family Portrait

Window Watchers

“While I was having a photo shoot, my mother decided it would be totally acceptable to have the photographer take photos of her and my brother creepin’ through the weird window in this photo. As you can tell, I was pissed and didn’t want to have anything to do with this picture. This picture has been making me, family and friends laugh since 1995! Thanks Madre!”

Team Tums - Mom

Team Tums

“This is my Mom and her two sisters when they were all flight attendants, apparently doing some pro bono advertising for Tums––and possibly a food review for the in-flight meal at the same time.”

Red, White, And Groovy - Family Portrait

Red, White, And Groovy

“My Mom has always been a creative sewer. Back in the early 70’s she thought dressing the family alike in the cool, trendy flag cloth would be a great idea. Note the awesome brown polyester pants and cool white belts sported by the guys! And little me on my father’s knee! This picture has been out of the family’s eye for decades and I recently dug it out of somewhere.  I showed it to my Mom and her reaction was “Good lord, what was I thinking?” That got a huge chuckle from me!”

The Adoption Prank - Siblings

The Adoption Prank

“Did your siblings ever tell you that you were adopted? And did they go as far as to make fake adoption papers and emails to back it up? Well mine did.”

The Re-makeover - Kids

The Re-makeover

“When I was little my older sister decided to give me a ‘makeover’, complete with blue eyeshadow and teeny tiny pigtails! Nearly 15 years later it happened once again.”
