Plenty of Fish

“This is my cousin and his date to Junior Prom.  He asked all the girls out, but they all had dates already.  He had the last laugh though because everyone wanted to dance with his fish date, so he danced with all of their dates.”

Pretty In Pink 5

“In the fall of ’85, when I was a junior in high school, a new, slick student asked me to go to Homecoming. I was smitten and immediately said yes. After my mother bought me a rather expensive (and fluffy) dress, the slick boy of my dreams asked someone else and dumped me. I was embarrassed and heartbroken. A few days later one of the nicest and most popular seniors in the entire school asked me to go to homecoming in the hall. While it was painfully obvious that he had been roped into it by a parent or my bigger brother, I agreed to his self-sacrifice. We ended up double-dating with one of the girls in my class and her senior boyfriend, and I had a wonderful time. He even kissed me good night, in that polite, “you weren’t a bad pity day” sort of way that good guys do.

John, wherever you are, you were my red-headed knight in shining armor. And sunglasses. So no one knew it was you who was with me. I bet you turned out wonderfully.”

Tinseltown

“This was one of my many dance costumes in the early 80’s. We were doing a theme to Star Wars for this one…but I’m not really sure why this particular costume was being used. Perhaps the cascading tinsel made it look futuristic? The worst part was that when my mom bought the photo package she also purchased a 5 inch button with this photo that she used to wear around.”

Win Win

The award was for the 1979 Boulder High School marching band winning the best in the state. I played the snare drum, which was extra hard since I had to use one hand to keep my dress/kilt down in case a swift updraft whooshed by. Even though the outfit is gone, I still have the trophy and always manage to bring it on first dates as a conversation starter.

– “Mitch, what’s that 3 foot trophy doing on the table?!”
– “Oh, that old thing? Lemme tell ya a story, m’lady…!”
