I’m A Little Bit Country

“80’s big hair had nothing on my mom’s hair from 1970!”

Dismount Vernon

“In the 1970s, my family took a trip to Mount Vernon, Virginia, home to George Washington. The whole family was there: my grandparents and aunt, my mother and father, and my sister and me. We decided to pose for photos atop one of the fences in the garden. I remember my father set up the tripod and watched as the family disappeared from view while the fence came crashing down. The only family picture he has from that day is us scrambling to get up, but unharmed. My sister and I were hysterical with laughter, but the rest of the family was humiliated.”

Lone Star

“My dad owned a restaurant in Austin and they had the bear from the Paul Newman film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean come to a party. This is the 1970’s so a loose bear drinking Lone Star and being fed tootsie rolls from little kids mouths was okay… right?”

Hat Trick

“The year– 1977. For my 2nd grade class picture, I was determined to wear this hat my Grandmother made for me; after all, it matched the dress my mother picked out for me! This photo is the re-take; when my mom saw the first picture – with the hat – she made me go for a do-over. Needless to say the hat came with that day too. I still stand by my decision.”

The Wonder Years

“During the ages of 8 to 11 years old (1972 to 1975) I became trapped in a vortex of awkwardness. And my mom’s taste in clothing really brought it to another level – this stuff was embarrassing even back then. I honestly don’t know how to chose which pictures to send because it seems each one was worse than the last. But here are the two best , age 8 from 1972 and age 10 from 1974.”

Uptown Funk

“This is a picture of my uncle and his friends before a school dance circa 1975. Leisure suits, bell bottoms, and they decided it was an awesome idea to remove their shirts for the picture. All the girls were gaga over these guys back then.”
