Ratty

“This is my absolutely favorite childhood picture of my husband. He was 12 years old. It was taken a day after Easter with his pet rat, that he called RATTY. His birthday was just a few weeks before Easter and my mother-in-law was going to take my husband to JC Penny for his traditional annual birthday picture. He wanted to have his picture taken with RATTY 🙂 And he did! It was shortly after that JC Penney Portrait Studio adopted a policy of no animals in its studios.”

Doggy Style

“Our family went to the local portrait studio with our dog, Prudence. My dad, who loved her very much, considered her a member of the family and therefore wanted her to be a part of the photo. When we posed for the picture, Prudence would not stay still so my Dad straddled the bench to keep her still. This photo hung in our house for years, and, the truth is, we were oblivious about its awkwardness until a close friend pointed it out.”

Lady With an Ermine

“I don’t know if this image quite qualifies for the site, as it is a masterpiece that I managed to defile in photoshop, but it IS awkward. And my dog counts as family… It came about when I looked at my dachshund-mix, Wesser, and thought- with love- “sometimes that boy looks like a weasel”. With that, DaVinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” immediately popped into my head and a scheme was born. The best part is, family and friends not only applauded my mangling of the masterwork, but are now requesting their own! Which, I think, speaks volumes to the familial awkwardness from which this sprang.”
