Sour Octopus

“When I was ten, I lived in Japan with my parents, who are Baptist missionaries. My mom was always on the alert for photos of Japanese culture and cuisine. She needed good pictures to show the churches back in the USA who were contributing financially to their ministry. So, I got drafted into modeling with fresh octopus, a tasty morsel from the sea.”

Party Pooper

“So my sister wanted a silly family photo, but Dad refused to play along.”

Mum’s The Word

“Notice the moon shine jug, shot gun, lucky horse shoe, and the glimmer of a wash board to the left decorated with a bow. Shelly chose the best mom jeans ever which were not only high rise, but I suspect she may have buttoned them with her teeth.
I believe she and Dan not only had a two-fer coupon on the button down shirts but also the haircut/style. Dan had a lovely Mum made to commemorate the 1983 Sadie Hawkins dance. Nothing says love like a lovely stuffed Pac-Man.”

Shower Time

“Rinsing station at a water park in Asia. Told my kids DO NOT use the green handle.”

The Little People

“I’m the boy sitting next to the two Umpa Lumpas (sisters), with my mom and brother right behind me. Soon after this fun-filled afternoon, my sister dropped a glass bottle of milk on my foot and I got 24 stitches.”

Troopers

“Coolest sister-in-law ever surprised my brother by inviting some special guests to the wedding. I may or may not have made out with the hotter storm trooper later that night.”

Little Squirt

“The photographer captures the exact moment Dad feels the shot while Mom just smiles for the camera…. now this is an awkward announcement photo!”

Lady With an Ermine

“I don’t know if this image quite qualifies for the site, as it is a masterpiece that I managed to defile in photoshop, but it IS awkward. And my dog counts as family… It came about when I looked at my dachshund-mix, Wesser, and thought- with love- “sometimes that boy looks like a weasel”. With that, DaVinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” immediately popped into my head and a scheme was born. The best part is, family and friends not only applauded my mangling of the masterwork, but are now requesting their own! Which, I think, speaks volumes to the familial awkwardness from which this sprang.”

Into The Woods

“In the truest sense of the term, this is an awkward family photo. Circa 1984. Failing to capture the spirit of my role in the North Stafford High School marching band, dad thought it made sense to stage a photo of me in my uniform … in the woods … in a chair that just happened to be there … and without my sax. Instead, it looks like I am the young regent of Sherwood Forest, perhaps its constable, given the bobby hat.”

Hey, Let’s Pose With a Tree

“One day my sister and I were taking a walk when she suddenly said ‘Hey, lets go take pictures with the trees.'”
