The 90’s

90’s Recreation

“We recreated this photo 23 years later, with a lot less hair.”

Lyin’

“In 1998, I was 7 and this was a show and tell. I told my classmates, ‘I went to Africa over the weekend and petted a lion.’ I lied.”

Fashion Downward

“Me, my sister, our dad and our grandma on a hike and wearing painfully 90s-era clothes. Dad thought he could hold both of us for the photo opp. GOOD JOB, DAD.”

Prom Fatigue

“It was 1992. We were at my now-wife’s senior prom. This was our umpteenth picture and we just wanted to hurry up and get out of those clothes–I mean, get to the dance.”

Pocket Man

“My Dad’s self-portrait. Is there anything more 90s than acid-wash denim and a fake Rolex? As for the pocket, I don’t know what to tell you.”

My Many Fashion Mistakes

“This was me in 8th grade, in ’92 or ’93. I don’t know what is worse: the perm, the ribbon, the tucked-in shirt that no sensible middle schooler would ever wear, the black shoes with white socks, the way-too-obvious black watch, the ’97 for my graduating year or the fact that I was trying to look cool. Epic fail!”

Crossed Up

“From our family portrait session in 1991. Olan Mills gave us  this photo at no additional charge. Guess who probably got a spanking later that evening.”

The Space Lady And Son

“This is me and my Mom performing on the streets of San Francisco, circa 1994. As you can tell from this pic, I’ve been blessed with impeccable fashion sense my whole life:
✓ Cosby Sweater (before it was creepy)

✓ Knit Elf Stocking Hat

✓ Granny Glasses

✓ Star Trek Keychain Clipped To Belt Loop

Also for anyone curious, my mom is “The Space Lady,” a famous* street musican and “outsider icon.” Her Greatest Hits album was originally released on hand-made cassette tapes back in the 80’s. It was re-released by an actual record label a couple years ago and was named in Vice Magazine’s 50 Best Albums of 2014 and NME’s “101 Albums to Hear Before You Die”

*by street musican standards, anyway.”
